AIREDALE CHEMICALS GETS BPR APPROVAL FOR PERACETIC ACID

Chemicals-Technology: November 2016

UK-based chemical company Airedale Chemical has been given an approval for producing peracetic acid (PAA), after it confirmed its place on the EU Biocides Products Regulation (BPR).

According to the BPR, the specifications chemicals such as disinfectants, preservatives, and pest control products have to obtain a clearance from the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), as well as covers biocidal products used for protecting materials, humans and animals against bacteria, pests and other harmful organisms.

The objective behind introducing the Europe-wide regulation is to ensure the greatest protection of people and the environment from the use of biocides, and to improve how the biocidal market operates within the EU.

Airedale Chemical has received an approval from ECHA, after its PAA products have met the requirements set out by the governing body.

Airedale Chemical managing director Chris Chadwick said: “This has been a lengthy process but we can’t stress enough how important it is to the company.  “We are now leading the way with a range of effective and approved biocide products. "It not only allows us to continue developing our peracetic acid product family, which is key to our five-year strategy, but it also means that we are currently the only UK manufacturer directly approved by ECHA.

“Biocides are used in a huge number of industries, including agriculture and industrial cleaning so it’s a huge market and we are now leading the way with a range of effective and approved biocide products.” PAA is an industrial disinfectant that is used by a wide range of industries such as recycling and waste management, dairy, food and drink manufacture and breweries, which is used primarily in circulation cleaning and industrial disinfection. It is expected that the global PAA market would be worth around £30m and is estimated to grow to nearly £45m by 2018.

Airedale Chemical manufactures PAA in dilutions of 2%, 5% and 15%, which is also available as Airocide PAAD, which has been approved by the UK Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) for agricultural, dairy and avian applications.

GE TO SELL WATER TREATMENT BUSINESS

Chemical & Engineering: November 2016

General Electric plans to sell its water treatment business by mid-2017 and put the proceeds toward the integration of the oil services firm Baker Hughes. The sale will end a nearly 15-year involvement with water treatment chemicals, equipment, and separation membranes. The water sale is a coda to a much larger deal in which GE plans to purchase a nearly two-thirds stake in Baker Hughes for $7.4 billion. GE will fold Baker Hughes into its own oil and gas services business to create a behemoth with 70,000 employees and annual revenues of $32 billion. The acquisition advances GE’s goal of melding digital tools with industrial and infrastructure operations. Baker Hughes brings service capability, whereas GE brings oil and gas equipment technology “with a digital framework,” GE Chairman Jeff Immelt says “We have been evaluating the fit of water in our portfolio for quite a period of time”. GE once heralded water treatment as a global megatrend but now believe the “fragmentation” of water treatment markets makes it less attractive now. Other firms that have backed away include Ashland, which spun out its water treatment chemicals business in 2014. GE entered water treatment in 2002 with the $1.8 billion purchase of BetzDearborn from Hercules. In 2006 it enlarged the business with the purchase of separation membrane maker Zenon Environmental for $650 million. Today, the water business is embedded in GE’s power business, which has $22.5 billion in sales. GE’s water business has annual earnings of about $300 million. The oil business has more upside potential than water treatment, says Ray Will, a director at the consulting firm IHS Markit. However, in making the shift, GE is not abandoning chemicals, Will points out. Baker Hughes is the number two player in oil production chemicals after Nalco.

CONVATEC LAUNCHES AQUACEL AG SURGICAL DRESSING

Textiles World: November 2016

ConvaTec, a leading global medical technology company, has announced the U.S. launch of AQUACEL® Ag SURGICAL SP dressing, extending the company’s range of AQUACEL® Ag SURGICAL cover dressings developed to help reduce surgical site infections.

AQUACEL® Ag SURGICAL SP dressing has a thin adhesive layer, to aid conformability for specific types of surgical wounds such as cesarean section and lumbar spine surgery. The new slim profile dressing is also designed to provide the same antimicrobial protection benefits as AQUACEL® Ag SURGICAL cover dressings.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) can be devastating to a patient’s health and costly for health care providers. In addition to the burdens of further treatment, under the Affordable Care Act, hospitals in the U.S. with high rates of patient readmissions 30 days post-surgery are subject to reduced reimbursement from Medicare.

“Patients undergoing back, abdominal and other types of surgeries have unique needs to support their post-operative healing and daily activities such as bathing, changing clothes and sleeping,” said Fiona Adam, Vice President and General Manager of Advanced Wound Care. “ConvaTec developed AQUACEL® Ag SURGICAL SP dressing in response to these specific needs as well as to address the risk of SSIs across a broad range of surgical wounds – in keeping with our commitment to the community of wound care specialists and patients whom we serve and whose lives we touch, every day.”

Like AQUACEL® Ag SURGICAL cover dressing, the new AQUACEL® Ag SURGICAL SP dressing features Hydrofiber® Technology, ConvaTec’s proprietary technology designed to help create a beneficial moist wound environment that supports healing. The antimicrobial silver dressing is highly conformable and provides a waterproof viral and bacterial barrier that supports patient comfort and hygiene, such as the ability to shower, after surgery.

AQUACEL® Ag SURGICAL SP received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration earlier this year and is available in a range of sizes to cover a variety of surgical site incisions.
